Breakfast was in fact the BEST part of the stay! Not only was the breakfast excellent and homemade, with a touch of Albanian tradition, the third-floor room we ate it in overlooked all of Gjirokaster.
SUPERB!
The only somewhat negative thing had NOTHING to do with the hotel or Gjirokaster but was google maps' routing of our walk up to the hotel. While the way we eventually found to walk down would have been a vigorous walk up, the route google maps recommended was TWICE as vigorous... and with backpack and laptop etc was quite a challenge.. especially in the on-again-off-again drizzly rain wi=hich is tiypical of the season (December).

Our hosts were great. They were always available for questions, requests, etc. Breakfast was very good and fulfilling. The location was in a walkable distance from all the sites, restaurants, ATMs.; although it was a bit difficult to find, due to a lack of signage, but our host came to us, via a phone call, and led us to it. The main bus stop is in the town center, and is not walkable...unless you are preparing for a mountain or hill marathon. The guesthouse is near a metro bus stop in Old Town, and walkable over very rough stone roads, as most of Albania's old towns are ☺️. We would not hesitate to stay here again!

This was not my first option in Gjirokastër. But I should actually thank the host at the other property that requested me to cancel my booking there, as they assigned my room to other guests.
Karafil guesthouse is a huge old stone house where the host family also lives.
My room was not in the main building so it was very quiet, comfortable and atmospheric: it even had a fireplace.
Breakfast was included in the rate and they even served petulla. The view was extraordinary.
The house is not accessible.
It was impossible to get my room completely dark.

One of the most friendly gueshouse we have been so far.
Everyone was so nice and helpful during our stay. They kept up the great albanian traditions with a warm welcome by serving coffee and rakia.
Facility was clean and well maintained as well.
We suggest to keep a TV in a room for more comfort.

My first time as an albanian in Gjirokastër. First of all it was an old house dating 220 years ago. They tried to keep the house as it was. Very typical and traditional. You could see the whole city from the balcony. The staff greeting us were very welcome,friendly and helpful. The location was amazing,just 5 min by walk from the Bazaar and the Castle. Next time here again :)
