Cartagena is a beautiful Caribbean port city on Colombia's northern coast and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The city was founded in the 16th century although the area has been inhabited for thousands of years. The city wall and much of the old town with its colonial architecture remains intact. Among the sites there are the Clock Gate, Bolivar Square and the Palace of the Inquisition. Not far from the old town is the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, a large colonial-era fortress. Most of the hotels, nightclubs, restaurants and shopping of interest to tourists is in the Bocagrande neighbourhood, which includes beaches and a boardwalk along the sea. However, the best beaches are those near the city including the Islas del Rosario, a national park comprised of several islands. There is an aquarium and an oceanarium on Isla Rosario and opportunities to snorkel, fish and swim.
